Design optimisation of labyrinth seals using LES

Labyrinth seals are extensively used in gas turbines to control leakage between components. In this research, the effects of geometry on sealing performance investigated. To obtain best performance, an investigation is undertaken into possibility optimising labyrinth seal planforms using a genetic algorithm (GA). Large Eddy Simulation (LES) for its ability accurately capture complex unsteady behaviour type flow. Three hundred LES calculations carried out. By making use large number processors, optimum can be achieved within design cycle timescales. The optimised shows reduction 27.6% compared baseline geometry. An immersed boundary method (IBM) with generate geometries background Cartesian grid. GA inherently parallel, and enables exploitation reliability accuracy benefit as demonstrated.
